At this week's edition of the event, Revmarka founder Eric Dahl was asked to speak at 1 Million Cups SLC, hosted by Investable.  Located on Commonwealth Avenue in South Salt Lake, 1 Million Cups follows a set structure where entrepreneurs and business leaders give presentations and then engage with and get feedback from the local audience.

With his allocated time as the final speaker, Dahl gave a presentation titled “The 4 Step Marketing Plan for Entrepreneurs.”  He began by showing an example of a 15-step marketing plan template created by Forbes in the early 90’s.  He said, “While these elements still have their place, embracing a more simplistic marketing plan will enable entrepreneurs to hit the ground running with clear, attainable goals, rather than overwhelming feelings.”

The 4 steps of the simplified plan were as follows:

1.     Establishing Goals

Referencing a favorite job interview question “What does success look like in this role?”, Dahl stated that to create relevant KPI’s and goals, it’s often easiest to work backwards, or to identify the goal and then create initiatives that lead to the desired achievement.

2.     Identifying the Audience

Using a Revmarka client as an example, he outlined how creating a client persona is key for any marketer.  He stated “Only 44% of B2B marketers utilize a client persona, which, to me, would be like only 44% of basketball players deciding to play ball in athletic shoes.  It’s shocking that establishing client personas are not viewed as an imperative.”

3.     Creating the Message

In this step Dahl stated that it’s crucial to think outwardly and to market to the audience in a manner they prefer, instead of what is easiest for the business.

4.     Starting the System

Referencing that “at the core, marketing is just a system” Dahl discussed the importance of implementing a shared marketing calendar, and to take the approach within all initiatives to “create, validate, and replicate.”

Robert Bell, who leads the efforts of 1 Million Cups SLC, presented Dahl with the standard orange 1MC mug which is given to all who speak at the events, while thanking him for presenting to the audience.  Excited about receiving the gift, Dahl stated “this mug will remind me of the good time had today with the 1 Million Cups crew.  I had been wanting to speak here for a while.”
